List of maintenance tasks to do in the fall

It’s a fact: a house requires frequent and diligent maintenance to maintain its good condition and value. Fall is a great time to do a host of odd jobs, indoors and out. Here are the home maintenance jobs to do in the fall to keep your property healthy.

Why is it important to maintain your house in the fall?

In general, the work and maintenance tasks to be done during the fall are used to prepare the property for the cold and snow that is coming. They help prevent breakage and damage that could occur during the winter. When the good weather returns, it is more cleaning work that is done, hence the expression spring cleaning.

What are the indoor maintenance tasks to do in the fall?

While in summer we spend a lot of time outdoors, winter is a good season to get indoors. The cold forces us to keep the windows closed and, therefore, the ventilation of the house is done less frequently. Some fall tasks will allow you to keep your environment clean and healthy. Fall is the perfect time to clean up places where dust and debris accumulate. Carpets, seats, curtains, armchair fabric, ventilation ducts: every corner of the house should go through it. Before you need your heating system on a regular basis, make sure it is running at full throttle. Cooler days and nights are coming so fast! Also, make sure it heats the inside of your home, not the outside. Your doors and windows should not let in any air. If so, add caulking or replace the weatherstripping. This small task will save you money on your electricity bill. If you didn’t have your fireplace swept this spring, you should do it before winter. Chimney sweeping is essential at least once a year. A poorly maintained fireplace can cause fires, damage from smoke seeping in, and carbon monoxide hazards.

What are the exterior maintenance tasks to be done in the fall?

It’s not just the inside of the house that needs fall maintenance. The exterior of your house and your land also needs attention. Here are some tasks to do before the first frosts and the first snowfalls: – Storage of equipment and outdoor furniture; – The closing of the swimming pool; – The size of the plants and the lawn; – The protection of trees and shrubs; – Preparation of the garden; – Cleaning gutters and copings. Take advantage of these exterior works to inspect the roof of your house and its components. Check that there are no cracks in the foundations, the plaster or the masonry. These few checks on the condition of your property could save you from unpleasant surprises during the snowmelt. Maintaining your home in the fall: a good investment If you’re like most homeowners, your weeks are flying by and your weekends are already busy. Including the time needed for fall tasks in your schedule can seem like a headache. Proper planning of the work to be done will help you check off all the items on your list. Spread your maintenance project over several weeks, from September to November: the task will seem much lighter. Also, several specialized companies can give you a hand, among other things for closing the pool, sweeping the chimney or cleaning the air ducts. The time you spend maintaining your home is an investment. A well-maintained property will retain its value and be more attractive to future buyers.
